Out of Character #18: Roleplay? In MY Tabletop?

All the world's a stage, and all of us merely players.  At the gaming table we've all roles to play, and while we don't necessarily dive into character, it's still an integral part of the Role Playing Game. 

So what's the deal behind roleplay?  Is it a silly affectation or an essential part of the experience?  Is it as easy as breathing or an impassable obstacle?  Is the game's in-character roleplay compatible with the crunch of the character sheet?
